Awards and Honors - Congratulations
August
Dr. Xiao Zhao has been named a 2024 Columbia University Velocity Fellow. The program provides pilot grant awards to accelerate progress in cancer research. Dr. Zhao’s project, “Establishment and characterization of a zebrafish xenograft model to study cholangiocarcinoma.” The study will utilize zebrafish as a disease modeling system to better understand cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a group of aggressive bile duct cancers, often found in advanced stages.
Dr. Munemasa Mori received a prestigious award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for his proposal “Development of humanized lungs in mice for modeling cystic fibrosis diseases.”
Brooke Dirvin, GRA Dept. of Genetics & Development, (Cardoso Lab), received a NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award (Kirschstein-NRSA) F31HL176168 award for her proposal, “Investigating the Genetic and Epigenetic Control of Basal Cell Identity.”
Dr. Xin Huang received the National Institute of General Medicine Sciences (NIGMS) Maximizing Investigator's Research Award (MIRA) 5-year award, R35GM154906-01 for his proposal “The regulatory R-loops in Pluripotency, Early Development, and Tissue Homeostasis.”
Dr. Jianlong Wang was awarded a National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) R21 grant for “Decoding NSUN2-mediated translational control of pluripotent stem cells.”
As part of a MPI team with Dr. Mingjiang Xu, University of Texas Health Science Center, Dr. Wang received an award from The National Cancer Institute for “Therapeutic value and mechanistic action of PSPC1 in AML” in May.
During January, he received R01 funding for “A Nucleolar Paradigm for Pluripotency of Human Embryonic Stem Cells” from the NICHD.
Dr. Carolina Petrillo (Snoeck Lab) received the 2024 Edward P. Evans Center for Myelodysplastic Syndromes Fellowship Award for her proposal “Role of tonic interferon signaling in the progression of hematological malignancies associated with TET2 mutation.”

Drs. Kelley Yan and Claudia Capdevila challenged the accepted identity of the gut’s true stem cells in their recent paper “Time-resolved fate mapping identifies the intestinal upper crypt zone as an origin of Lgr5+ crypt base columnar cells.” The utilization of lineage tracing, computational tools and a transgenic mouse model led to the discovery that FGFBP1 cells give rise to all intestinal cells, including the assumed Lgr5+ stem cells.

Dr. Jianwen Que was selected to membership in the Association of American Physicians, an honorary medical society that recognizes the highest caliber of physician-led science accomplishments and scientific leadership.
Earlier in the year, Dr. Que was awarded the American Gastroenterological Association’s Funderburg Research Award in Gastric Cancer for “The Role of Intestinal Metaplasia in Gastric Cancer Development.”

Dr. Hans-Willem Snoeck in collaboration with Dr. Jellert Gaublomme (Biological Sciences) received the Interdisciplinary Research Initiatives Seed (IRIS) Fund Program award in July for their project involving lung organoid generation, analysis and CRISPR screening.
Dr. Hans-Willem Snoeck also in July, was awarded the Edward P. Evans Center (HICCC) award for Myelodysplastic Syndromes for his project “Nucleolar dysfunction as a therapeutic liability in cohesion mutant MDS.”
Dr. Hans-Willem Snoeck together with Dr. N. Valerio Dorrello (Pediatric Critical Care) received the TRx/ACT (Irving Institute for Clinical Translational Research) for “Cell therapy for alveolar lung diseases” in August.
Brooke Dirvin (Cardoso Lab) was selected to present her poster/abstract “Identification and Targeting of Regulators of SARS-CoV-2-Host interactions in the Airway Epithelium” in August at the Gordon Research Conference on Lung Development, Injury and Repair in Waterville Valley, NH.
Xiangyi (Sherry) Ke (Cardoso Lab) was selected to present her poster/abstract “Morphogenesis and regeneration share a core transition state program that balances proximal-distal lung specification” in August at the Gordon Research Conference on Lung Development, Injury and Repair in Waterville Valley, NH. Sherry received the poster presentation award and an honorarium for her abstract from the Progenitor Cell Translational Consortium (PCTC).
Dr.Takehiro Otoshi (Cardoso Lab) was selected to present his poster/abstract “Impact of genetic background variability in airway hyperresponsiveness by prenatal disruption of retinoic acid signaling” in August at the Gordon Research Conference on Lung Development, Injury and Repair in Waterville Valley, NH.
Dr. Akihiro Miura (Mori Lab) was selected to present his poster/abstract “Exploring the Production of Whole Huma Lungs via Conditional Blastocyst Complementation” in August at the Gordon Research Conference on Lung Development, Injury and Repair in Waterville Valley, NH.
Dr. Akihiro Miura and Dr. Yuko Shimamura (Mori Lab) were honored in October with Overseas Research Fellowships by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). The two-year awards are the most competitive fellowships in Japan.
Dr. Jonathan Miller (Yan Lab) was selected to present his poster/abstract, “Upper Crypt Progenitor Cells in the Regenerative Response in Rotavirus-Induced Acute Gastroenteritis” in November at the annual NIDDK DDRCC Director’s Meeting in Cincinnati, OH.
Dr. Shang-Hsin (Jason) Wu (Zhao Lab) was selected to present his poster/abstract, “Time-Course RNAseq Revealed Dynamic Transcriptional Changes in a Mouse Model of Toxin-induced Biliary Atresia” in November for the annual American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) in Boston, MA.
